Mapping Memories: A Therapeutic Art Experience

On Thursday, 27th March 2025, we hosted a wonderful therapeutic art workshop in collaboration with Painting Progress, a community organisation that promotes art for social impact. Led by an experienced art therapist, this session provided a safe and creative space for participants to relax, express themselves, and explore the power of art as a tool for well-being.

The workshop began with a series of warm-up exercises, including continuous line drawing, helping participants ease into the creative flow. The main activity revolved around mind mapping through art, where attendees painted their favourite daily routes—whether it was a walk to the supermarket, a commute to the train station, or their morning routine mapped out visually.

The session was intimate and engaging, with just a handful of participants, allowing for personalised guidance and a relaxed, open atmosphere. The artwork produced was both thoughtful and beautiful, and we’re thrilled that some of these pieces will be considered for Painting Progress’ annual art exhibition in May 2025.

Therapeutic art workshops of this nature are a vital part of our work in supporting asylum seekers and refugees, many of whom have faced immense challenges. Through creativity, we aim to provide a sense of community, emotional relief, and a space for self-expression. Art can be a powerful tool for mental health, helping to process difficult experiences while fostering connection and belonging.

Feedback from our members has been overwhelmingly positive, with many sharing how much they appreciated the calm and welcoming environment and how inspiring the whole experience was.

We look forward to hosting more workshops like this and continuing to provide creative spaces for self-expression and connection. Stay tuned for future events!
